System Restor Not Working

G

Guest

I recently wanted to make a restore point, so I went to Control
panel/Performanceand Maintenance/System Info to adjust max . restore page
file and recived an error of 'System Restor Encountered An Error Trying To
Enable/Disable One Or More Drives. Restart Your Machine And Try Again' which
I have done and still receive the error.

So I tried accessing it directly from the Control Panel(top left corner) and
got the error message 'Sys. Restore Is Unable To Protect Your Computer.
Please Restart and Run Sys. Restore Again' which I have and still no joy.

I have checked Services/Components but unable to see it listed, have tried
to start it from a Command Prompt but get a message along the lines of 'Its
not a recognised command/ batch file' or something like that.

To recap Windows shows me System Restore is working but when i try to use it
or install software windows tells me it's not working.

Anybody got any ideas

Hi,

Let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been
created recently that may help us diagnose the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in the right
pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two
arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event information to the
clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two event here. There's no need
to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Thanks for your reply.

I have already checked Event Veiwer as decribed and can confirm there are no
entrys under "sr" or "srservice".

Any further ideas?

Anyone?

Thanks for your advice.

I have tried reinstalling Sys. Restore from a friends Xp disc (I only have
T/Clone), starts OK then get an error message near completion and it fails.

Have also tried reinstalling SP2(Oh what a pain it was) but still no joy.

So I think I'm going to have to live with this and regulary backup
everything to disc.

Once again thanks for your help, unless you can think of anything else.

No log has been entered into the Event Viewer Log, and as for the error
message when I try to reinstall from disc is "INF Install Falifure. Reason,
An Extended Error has Occurred".

Hope this helps a bit more.

Look for the i386 folder on the drive. It should contain the following files. If
this is found point the reinstall of System Restore to it.

FILELIST.XM_
RSTRUI.EX_
SR.SY_
SRCLIENT.DL_
SRDIAG.EX_
SRFRAME.MM_
SRRSTR.DL_
SRSVC.DL_
SRVSVC.DL_

Have tried installing from disc XP disc and it fails on "srcleint.dll" with
an extended error. Have also tried installing from SP2 download files and
receive an "install failure" with the srclient.dll file aswell.

Do a search for srcleint.dl_ and make a copy on the desktop and point the
install to it.
