i got a friends desktop out of pawn so i could borrow his system minus the
HDD. his HDD has only windows 98SE, it's a dell dimension L433c, he got it in
1999-2000, it had aHDD with only 7GB. i had a HDD with 80GB and XP home
edition installed as the OS. i properly disconected his 7 GB HDD with all
power disabled and conected my 80GB HDD, booted up normally and XP home ed.
was there as always as it was on my old system(the motherboard had a chipsrt
that was too old it kept crashing on the internet , even after i upgraded to
XP)iused his system in this way for about a month, till my new motherboard
and processor arrived via internet sales. i removed my HDD in the reverse way
i conected it and reconected his, i had already saved his important data from
his 7GB HDD to floppies. in my haste to get my new harware into my old tower,
i didn't feel the need to check his system. i stll needed his monitor for
anothert month at least so i didn't want to disconnect and reconnect to and
from both systems. when i went to boot up his desktop i heard the fan start
then stop a second or 2 later. the fan always started up when the power cord
was first plugged in after being unplugged. there is a red light attached to
the motherboard that comes on for a short period, likely powered by the
mainboard battery. i have disconected power to my hardware in my system and
hooked it up to his, (if it's a fuse the only 1 is a smll insulted 1 so i
cannot tell if it's blown) with no change - fan won't start , pushing power
button does nothing-the last time i had used his system with my HDD all went
well shutdown was normal so i am request any and all possible fixes and/or
tests. if it's the power supply a test should show it? i know a motherboard
test for $15, do you think dell would have support for an older system still
accessible? if anyone who has experienced similar difficulties, even if they
could not rmemdy the problem pleae enlighten me

I had an HP Pavilion PC that had a similar problem. I went to do a memory
upgrade, inserted the new memory, closed up the case, hit Power - Nothing.
Well, sometimes the fan would spin. I then took out the new memory, but it
was too late! I could take out and put back in the CMOS battery sometimes
to make the fan spin, but mostly when I pressed Power, it was dead. My PS
was ok, they told me I had fried my Motherboard.

Hope it helps you,

No, they did not test it, DestBuy wanted another $25 to do that on top of $60
for them to look at it. Then they told me that a new Motherboard could be
anywhere from $100 to $800, so I just decided to get a new PC instead.

In reality, however, Many things could have gone wrong. I could have fried
my motherboard, could have fried just the memory module, could have
disconnected something by accident, could have screwed up the CMOS battery.
Nobody knew what was wrong, however.

In your case, I would recommend that they test your motherboard, or that you
look for a new PC.

Hope my ordeal helped...

yes you have help immensely as now i'll break down and spend the $15, that's
all the guy down at the local with the pc support store said it would cost
when i 1st mentioned the difficulties i was having. i have previously
connected a fully functionable power supply still in another tower of one of
desktops, with great difficulty and frustration mind, and nothing new even
glimmered a ray of hope. so i had almost foresaken any motherboard rescue
attempts and had started to research compariable boards, new releases and
old. however since be informed via your uplifting response i shall cross my
fingers and hope it is a less noticeable correction or repair needed, as the
price would not be great, a better board available for approx. $125, a
slightly high system rental fee for for 3 months. i am, however, still using
the monitor, it's bigger/ better than mine, for now. what i am worrieed about
is his significant other, whose response would deffinetly not be a shrug of
the shoulders, as my good buddy gave. so i thank you for all your help and
support and i'll hopefully win the battle to hide and/or neligabely
noticabely repair
