System Interference:

X

x@y

Hello Everyone,

I am using Windows XP pro. OE6, IE6, with
Avast pro, Kerio Personal Firewall, & Webroot Spy Sweeper.
I have run my AV, and Spy Sweeper, and they came up clean.

Regardless if I am on Line or off, every ten minutes at times
every five minutes, there is a split second interference
showing the hourglass where the mouse cursor is.

It looks like a program wants to auto load but nothing happens.
While typing this Post it is kicking @ five minutes intervals.

If I have the screen saver on it will shut down, it is also acting
similar to a mouse click.

Has Anyone had, or having similar Problem?

Suggestions for a Fix are Welcome,

Thanks, x@y

It'll be easier to fix if you know what it is. Try running Process
Explorer and keeping an eye on it during the slowdown. It may identify the
process that consumes the CPU cycles.

Me too! This has been happening to me for quite a long time, as though
something were temporarily running in the background. I wondered if it might
be a security check of some kind by a spyware program such as Sunbelt's
CounterSpy, which I have installed on my system. They are supposedly always
"on guard" and watching your system.

In any case, I find it annoying and intrusive, as if someone keeps grabbing
my mouse in a game of tug-of-war!

Hello c/s,

Thanks for Your info on the same problem,
I thought I was the only one having annoyances.

So far we have two suggestions on this Thread,
if You know how to follow them please do, and post back the
results, so someone can advice us further.

Thanks x@y

By all means it is very annoying & intrusive.

So far we have two suggestions on this thread, if You know how
to carry them out please do, and post back the outcome,
so someone may help us further, I will try and post back the test results.

Hi! The event log gave me no clues as to the source of the problem.
I don't "do" safe mode any more since I got stuck there and had to restore
my entire computer, although that was my previous computer with W98.

I'm not sure what a Process Explorer is, but if it's in the Windows Task
Manager--showing processes running, it would be next to impossible to catch
what was running in the background and causing the problem, because it all
happens so quickly and is over quickly.

I can live with it (reluctantly, I admit), and it is more a case of just
wanting to know who/what is taking over my curser and why.

Winxp & win9* are completely different if you got stuck in safe mode then
that was because your sys had a problem.
Starting in safe mode eleminates all but the basic MS stuff & usually
prevents external apps & drivers starting.
Its very much a diagnostics tool

Did it-- downloaded the Process Explorer as Daave suggested.
And it was easy to see that it is Sunbelt's CounterSpy that is the grabber,
with occasionally my Norton protection making a bigger, longer grab at the
curser.
So I guess I'll have to live with that. At least I know they're doing what
I paid them to do.
Maybe this would work for you too if you download it.

Event logs show anything?
It happens in safe mode?

Hello DL,

I checked the "Windows Task Manager" It lists 37 Processes.

The CPU usage is 0% to 13%, System Idle.

I was watching for a while, and noticed that after the split sec.
interference the CPU usage would go right up to 54% for about
5 sec. then back to between 0% to 13%.

I am not sure if is this that You are asking for Event Logs,
if not Please post back on how to display that Screen.

I booted Windows in "Safe Mode" And it does not happen
in "Safe Mode" While I was in Safe Mode
I have scanned the Computer for Virus & Spyware,
and the System came clean as usually.

I was working on this Project all afternoon, and these are
the results. I am going to try the Process Explorer Test.

You are Welcome to Post back with further advice.

Thanks, x@y

Hello AnnieO,

Thanks for Posting back I was working on the "DL" suggestion,
all afternoon see my results on "DL" Post in this thread.

Yes soon I will download the "Process Explorer" As per Daave
suggested, and will Post back my results on Daave's Post.

Please Note: I run Avast Pro. as an antivirus, and still get zapped
I may be wrong but I think it is something else causing the problem.
I wish more knowledgeable would help us on this Mystery.

I think if we will be able to solve this one, we might receive
the NOBEL Price.

Thanks, x@y

Hello Patrick,

Thank You very much for Your reply, and the above Link,
I have downloaded "Process Explorer" = "P.E."

I have run P.E., and noticed that Webroot Spy Sweeper
reacts to the interference, I do not think it is Spy Sweeper
causing the problem, P.E. shows a Line in red produced
by Spy S. every third flick, it happens so fast there is no
time to read what the line says.

So I had to wait with my finger on Print Screen button
till it happens, then take a shot, after a few misses
I got two shots with the red message.

The line appears in Red for about 1/2 sec.,
and the "PID" Number changes every time.
The following is from a screen shot of P.E. @ work.

Process PID CPU
WRSSHP 2724 3.03
WRSSHP 1012 2.27

wrsshp has a Webroot Spy Sweeper icon in front of it.

Please Advice on what could be done next.

Best Regards, x@y

Norton has become a resource hog
Niether an AV or Spyware app should cause this, unless perhaps you have low
sys memory
It certainly doesnt happen on any of my PC's, which have both AV & Malaware
apps running

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Logs

Thanks for the above instructions, will check soon and post back the
results. Below are the results from the "Process Explorer Test"

Then it would appear that your 'interference' is caused by webroot.
I recently trialed both this and Spyware Doctor on my sys, Webroot caused my
remote backup app to fail.

Hello DL,

I have verified the "Events Logs" As per Your instructions,
there are five different Folders for Event Logs, only four of
them has records, and they are:
Application;
System;
ACCEvent;
Antivirus;

I have verified all of the above four very carefully, and there
are no Events recorded with the same rate of frequency,
compared to the interference I see on screen Monitor.
"Interference" At times called "Glitch" In electrical terms.

While typing this reply, the glitch is occurring every five Minutes.

Still have two Screenshots from the "Process Explorer" Test,
I will forward them to: Webroot Support, and see if they can help.

I have also checked this Thread "Watched" and will keep
on top of the NG. for a few weeks, in case more suggestions
are received.

Thank You very, very Much for Help, and Advice

i also use webroot spy sweeper. i am running ver 5.05 and have upgraded
to newer ver on another computer. i then uninstalled spysweeper because
the new version is a HOG!! and i will not upgrade to new version with
this computer. for whatever reason they changed things in the new
version and made my other system do just what you describe. try
uninstalling and re-installing with version 5. or try and disable
spysweeper and see if it solves the prob. first. hope it helps -mike
