crashing frequently

My wife and I use Win XP Pro on our home PC. We each have our own user
account. Hers has been acting odd lately, and now it seems to have
caught on over on my account as well. It started with IE6 a few weeks
back. She would start IE6 and it would not get to any website
anywhere. I also noticed that while IE6 was running the CPU would
crank up to 100% usage and stay there. More recently, the computer has
been crashing intermittently on her. Now it seems to crash every time
within a couple of minutes of first booting up. I was investigating to
try to figure out why and it has now started doing it on my user
account as well (I am writing to you from the admin account in safe
mode). I have tried it with AV running and without (we use Avast). I
have both startup folders disabled so as to minimize junk being loaded
at bootup, and now I cant be logged in more than 2 or 3 minutes before
it just shuts the machine down completely, every time. I have even
turned it on, logged into my account (also tried hers with the same
result) and walked to the kitchen to get a drink without starting any
programs, and it shuts down the machine before I return. Any ideas?

I ran adaware and spybot yesterday to get rid of the normal weekly
spyware that accumulates. I ran a virus scan both with Avast and with
TrendMicros online scan yesterday. They found nothing.

Please help.

As of today I have found that when trillian is started up under my
wifes user account it also hammers the CPU to 100% usage and stays
there until a crash occurs. The crash is always in the form of the PC
shutting down completely.

As for the crashing in my user account I have since found out that was
caused by a heat issue I have since fixed.
