flash drive kills all usb ports

Using new Corsair 1 gb flash drive to transfer files from laptop to pc (XP
home and XP Pro respectively), several trips already made, last time done
caused all usb ports to quit. NO devices on usb ports work. Had to switch
back to old style mouse plug to get mouse action. Also, wouldn't boot right,
and number of other problems. After of hours of pecking at it, finally got it
to light up again, and now has constant flashing message "usb device not
recognized, malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognize it". But at the same
time, using 'my computer' it 'sees' and will open the flash drive.
Don't think this is a trojan bomb (could be?) that waited until transfer
occured, always doing antivirus (Avast) and spyware (zonelabs and webroot spy
sweeper). Was distracted by 7 year old child climing all over my head with
trying to do this. What did I miss in the removal - transfer ritual? How can
I repair my pc now?
