usb device replaced cd drive

I recently put a new usb flash drive into the usb port of my Dell Win XP pro
machine - when I finished I thought I ejected it properly, but now my cd rom
drive is not being recognized and won't open. Furthermore, when I insert
the usb flash drive (sandisk cruzer) it is identified on both the usb device
drive and on the former cd drive letter (D). When I eject it the both
dirves disappear from My Computer. Any suggestions? JimM

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete/remove the USB device and
the CD drive, do not stick the USB device into a port, reboot, Windows
should redetetct the CD drive, then try putting the USB in and see what
happens.
