Software incompatible with XP Pro SP3

I have a number of 'legacy programs' running on my Dell Dimension 3100
that have been working fine with XP Pro SP2, Installing SP3 has made
them totally unusable.

Included is
Quicken v6.0 (c 1998)
ACT! Version 6.0

The former had a problem where every three seconds the cursor would jump
to the beginning of the entry line.

With the latter, searching for a name wouldn't accept more than one
letter at a time (as though insert was on - it wasn't), and the (ACT!)
word processor would crash when trying to save the file.

I also found undue delays in the operation of Word 2003, sometimes the
hourglass would come on and it would take ten seconds

At first I thought the problems were to do with the Microsoft Natural
Keyboard 4000 (Intellitype) that I bought just after installing SP3,
then I thought that the problems were due to a memory upgrade I applied
(1Gb->2Gb) a couple of months ago.

Removing both of those made no difference, but removing SP3 has resolved
all the problems.

Posted here for information.

What does Intuit say about this?

What does ACT! support say?

I use Word 2003 on several XP Pro SP3 systems - including this one - and do
not find this problem.

As they've been saying since 2001 .. "Buy the latest version, we don't
support that one!" (They say that about my Quickbooks 2000, too!)

Same as Intuit plus, "You haven't paid for extended support."

Yes, that is odd. But **all** the problems have gone away with
uninstalling. (And I unloaded virus checker, firewall etc. to try to
ensure the cleanest system.)

As a further thought - I did have to unload Viewsonic's Pivot program
which had a peculiar effect on the cursor (jumping to screen centre)
before SP3.

However, others have reported associated problems (including continuous
disk activity and slow responsiveness with AVG Free v 8.0. I'm going to
remove this for a spell, when I may try reinstalling SP3 and see if the
other problems are repeated.

Yes, thanks! My Win98 system is still working fine and stable, but of
course there are some new programs that won't run on it.

Just to record that, after a clear spell of stable running, I
re-installed SP3 and then AVG 8.0, and the machine is now pretty good.

So thanks for your help and comments, Patrick (and others),
