System Information Total Physical Memory shows only 256 MB of 1 Gb

I have Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 3438G with XP SP2. It has 1 Gb of RAM.
However, System Information shows only 256 Mb Total Physical Memory and 673
Mb Available Physical Memory?! So it tells me that I HAVE LESS MEMORY
INSTALLED THAN WHAT IS AVAILABLE?

I checked also Dxdiag and it shows all 1 GB.

I noticed this error when I executed MadOnions 3DMark2001SE benchmarking
program and got only 15500 points (previosly about 18500 points). I checked
from 3DMarks system info and it showed only 256 Mb of RAM. After restarting
3Dmark2001SE, it showed right amount of RAM (1 GB), but its Memory Info
showed only one 256 MB memory DIMM.

After that I ran SiSoftSandra and it showed all 1 GB. I also checked BIOS
and it showed also 1 Gb.

So, it seems that System Infomation can't show the right memory or there is
really something wrong with memory DIMMs.

Has anybody any advice or hints what to do? HelpDesk from Fujitsu said that
I should format and reinstall XP, but reinstalling all the programs is quite
a job and I hesitate to do that for the first thing. And it doesn´t help if
there is something wrong with the memory.

Thanks in Advance
Matti

Is it affecting your pc's performance at all? cuz if it isnt i wouldn't worry
about it...but thats me.

I guess it is, because of 3DMark results got down about 3000 points, but I am
not so sure of that. Maybe something else also affects to 3 DMark results.
But this bug(?) seems strange because Microsoft asks users to check
installed memory from System information.

How many ram chips do you have?

take all out but one systematically swap ram until you notice a change.
identify faulty ram.

have you used memtest86

Thx for advice. I ran memtest86 an it showed no errors. This probably
indicates that memory is ok, byt XP doesn't recognize it (always). Or?
