From the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:

Idle : not occupied or employed: inactive: not turned to normal use

To be a little nicer than Rocket J. Squirrel...

The way an operating system works it that is helps the processor decide what
it should do and when. The processor always needs something to do. So when
there is nothing else to do there is a process (kind of like a program) that
does pretty much nothing. It is always the lowest priority program by
nature so it only takes up the time that none of the other processes need.
If you have a program that seems to be slow yet the Idle Process is taking
up a lot of time, it is because that program is waiting on some external
action like hardware or your drive and the Idle Process is sitting in the
wait time.

I hope this helps!

Apologies to all, and particularly to the OP. I don't have a problem with
people asking 'dumb' questions. I certainly asked my share while I was
learning the ropes. But when I was lower on the learning curve, people read
through earlier posts to see if their question was already asked - and the
OP's question has been asked answered many times each week in this group. It
was about respecting the group. I might add that it's so much easier now to
look things up on the Internet.
