system idle process

For some reason the system idle process is using 99% of
the cpu usage. I have no idea how to correct this. I don't
even know what the system idle process is for. Can anyone
help. Thanks

There's nothing to fix. Simply means your pc is doing nothing.

It's an indication of how much more the processor could do if you
started some programs up and gave it something to do with all that Idle
time!

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. ;-}
The "System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has nothing to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear.

To "correct" this, _use_ the computer.

I have had this problem for a long time now after a windows security
update! I understand that System Idle Process should be high when
other processes are not using the system. But what is weired is that
when I am using the computer for actual processing, System Idle
Process is still high and it even is higher than the active process.
Say SIP is @ 90% and the active process @ 10%. When I go to the
performace tab in task manager and show the kernel times, almost 90%
of the CPU time is spent in the kernel even when other processes are
running.

I have run virus scan, spyware scan, parasitics scan, ..., but the
computer is way slower than before. No harware failure or know
conflitcs either.

Please help.............
