System Hangs at XP screen

I downloaded the most recent update to Adobe Reader 7.0 (I think it's 7.0.5).
When prompted to reboot, the system hangs at the welcome to windows xp
screen. I can only access windows in safe mode. I thought if I could just
uninstall adobe reader & reinstall it, I would be ok, but I can't uninstall
because I'm in safe mode. I also tried going back to several system restore
points, but I still hang at the welcome to windows xp screen. Starting at
last known configuration doesn't help either. I really don't want to have to
do a system restore! I also ran anti spyware and antivirus from safe mode
and have no issues there.
