System freezes at the logon screen after problems...

I was able to reboot my computer, but once it reached the logon screen, the
system would not take any key at all. That is, even if I typed my password
in the password box, the system remained blank and froze. The
Ctrl-Alt-Delete was no longer working. I restarted the computer a few times
with the same result.

Hi, Hyde Park
I think maybe is your system files has problem, you can try to logon in save
mode. If you can logon in save mode, repare the system files.

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if that works or not. Maybe your keyboard
is defective or not plugged in all the way in the back of the
mputer. --- Steve

Thanks a lot, guys. But I don't think it is the hardware issue since I used
another fresh HD to boot and it worked just fine. I am afraid something must
have been wrong with the system.

What are the essential files for keyboard and navigation (mouse or pad)?

Well it seems you have rule out a problem with the keyboard. If you can not
boot into Safe Mode or last known good configuration you will probably need
to try an upgrade/repair install of the problem, operating system. I have
seen times where logon was finally allowed after a long period of time like
up to thirty minutes which at least gives you a change to see what is
reported in the system and application logs and maybe attempt other
epairs. --- Steve
