System freezes after Start Up

Rick

Hi,

Recently, my laptop (Toshiba Satellite) began to freeze
up after the WinXP start up. I had been having trouble
with spyware etc, and I wanted to try to clean up my
computer of spyware, adware, potential viruses etc. I
Installed McCafee VirusScan (which we have had for 2
years) and I had a pre-installed version of Norton Anti-
Virus on the computer when I installed McCaffe (software
conflict?).

Anyways, after McCaffe was installed, I wanted to perform
a virus scan and McCaffe froze followed by the whole
system freezing. I tried to restart but when start up
happened, the system would freeze at some point. Some
times I would be able to get as far as the control panel
but I couldnt get into add-remove programs or anything
else. Also McCaffe would be the first to start up and
many times, it would be the only thing that would start
up before the system froze again.

I have also noticed that starting up the computer is
slower now.

If anybody can help in any way, that would be great.

Thanks.

Well you can all disregard my complaint because I
magically managed to fix the problem.

I may as well ask about the problems I was having before
this one. A lot of the time I would try to install
something or use System Restore etc and the Windows error
reporting thing comes up. This would happen a lot and I
would have to restart the computer to install something.
Of course, after a while it would happen again and I
would have to restart again.

I dont know if this is spyware, adware, a hijacker, a
virus, or whatever. If you know what it is can you please
tell me? And if you know how to fix it, that would be
even better.

Thanks.

How about giving us details of the Errors held by Event Viewer?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Links giving some information about specific Error Reports are:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

These links, however, do not contain information about each and every Error Report.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Hope this helps.
