spyware infection

Yesterday afternoon I had a popup that I tried to close. I received a msg from mCcaffe with a suspected virus notice. I ran the virus scan an followed the proper steps. When complete I again went on enternet expl. and the same popup appeared. say "stop u may have been infected with spyware/adware, click here to download free program" I tried to close it but each time I did another ad would come up and an new msg from McCaffe. At that point I had done 4 virus scans. I was instructed my tech support (McCaffe) to scan DOS for viruses which I have tried to do several times using their instructions. I was told to hold down the F8 key when the splash screen appears at the restart. I have yet to see that! Nor have I seen the advanced options menu that supposedly should come up. It was at that point I was to choose safe mode. I then checked Windows instructions on getting to safe mode and the dos screen. .I went to the start screen and clicked "turn off computer" (there is no "drop down" menu with a shut down prompt on my xp) I clicked restart then enter. It did just that. It DID NOT give me the message"please select the operating system to start" After several attempts I have yet to see that anywhere. I ran another virus scan this morning (that makes 6 total) and there were 3 trojan infected viruses: vbs/psyme,downloader gf (2) and several potentially unwanted programs (which I quarantined) All were from adware (12) I have McCaffe virus scan and firewall installed on my computer. I am stumped! I would appreciate any help you can suggest. By the way, this even happens when I go into word processor and bypass the internet altogeter. Very strange.

It is amazing how much garbage can be picked up just from
surfing the 'net. Below you will find 2 item that you
will want to install and run immediately. These programs
eliminate spyware and adware, and best of all they are
free.

Go to: www.download.com

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and under the
heading "Most Popular" you will find "Ad-Aware"
and "SpyBot-Search & Destroy." Click and download each
program. Before you run them, make sure to use the
update feature on both programs to make sure they are up
to date.

And update you antivirus often.

Hope this helps.

thanks david, i will try that. i thought i had the problem cleaned up at one point. then i purchased macafee spam blocker, privacy service and spywear. after i installed the spyware i could not access the internet at all. everything froze and the same stupid ads that cause problems yesterday reappeared! I did an uninstall for all of them but still nothing, I could not even reach tech support. there was about a 2 minute window when i got on and checked this site again so i hope the "free" programs work better.

i had the same problem. instead of downloading a bunch
of programs you can just adjust your internet security
settings and privacy settings within internet options.
you can block pop-ups from know sites through the privacy
settings. however you must make sure you do not block
all cookie usage because you cannot access e-mail and
many site buttons. just play around with the settings
until you have something worked out.
