One XP Home user was able to cure this issue today by disabling startup
items--presumably the non-microsoft startup items visible via MSCONFIG.

This may well be worth pursuing. If it works, I'd love to see a list of the
startup items you temporarily disabled long enough to get the app to
function correctly.
