System configuration utility

Hi everyone,

I keep getting the message that virtual memory is running too low and I'm
trying to do something about it. I just went to system configuration
utility, clicked the startup tab, and deselected some of the programs that
it seemed I didn't need to run upon startup. However, I'm looking for other
ways to ease the burden on my machine, the which has just a celeron
processor. For instance, I clicked under the Services tab and saw a load of
potential prey. But, to be honest, I recognize hardly any of these services,
such as "Application Layer Gateway," "Background Intelligent T...,"
"Cryptographic Services," and essentially everything else listed. While I
doubt I truly need all of these items selected, I fear unchecking one of
them will bring my machine to a screeching halt. Given my limited knowledge
in computers, is there any easier way to tidy up my machine with the System
Configuration Utility? I see under the General tab one can choose
Diagnostic setup. If I choose this, will I get myself into trouble? Thanks
for your help.

Right-click "My Computer", "Properties", "Advanced" tab. Under Performance section, click the
"Settings" button, "Advanced" tab, under the Virtual memory section, click the "Change" button,
and check the option, "System managed size". Click the "Set" button, click "OK", "Apply", and
"OK" your way out. Reboot.

You should not disable services using msconfig. That should be done in
services. From Start | Run type in services.msc. Click ok. Also
msconfig should be used for troubleshooting, not for managing startup
programs and services.

Here are some resources to see what the various services and startup
entries are:
