System Configuration Utility

Running WXP. In the past, I have run the System Configuration Utility and
under the Start-Up list have un-checked specific items, without difficulty.
Recently, I unchecked what appeared to be a duplicate entry (and checked all
of its information to confirm that it was a duplicate). However, this time,
the System Configuration Utility window continues to open each time I
subsequently boot up. This occurs even though I have checked the box that
requests that the window not re-open. I have used this utility in the past
and it has been straight forward. Checking the box has meant that the window
did not re-open. This time, however, it continues to re-open. Any suggestions?

It's triggered by an entry here:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Delete the reference to
msconfig.exe to get rid of the prompt.

Thanks very much Pegasus. Initially, I went to my 'start' menu and then to my
'Run' menu and saw that the 'msconfig' entry was still on view in the 'Run'
window. I could not seem to delete that entry using either my Delete button
or Backspace button, and the msconfig entry always re-appeared when I
initially established a blank entry. So, I replaced the 'msconfig' entry with
another entry ('My Documents') and closed down and re-booted the system. The
System Configuration Utility window re-appeared and I again checked 'do not
re-appear' and OK, and that's the last time I've seen that window after I
re-boot, although 'My documents' remains in the 'Run' window if I re-open
that window (but it doesn't seem to open again automatically now). Anyway,
now I am wondering two things:
1. Did I do the correct thing, or go to the correct place, according to your
earlier advice with the HKLM\... suggestion in order to eliminate the
msconfig.exe item?
2. Is there any way to delete the entries in the 'Run' window box 9as well
as the entries below it that can be reached using the menu for that bar)?

Thanks again.

It's unfortunate it's so poorly documented but sysconfig is a
troubleshooting tool, not a repair tool. You're probably useing it
wrong.
The entry comes back because it's a required process in order for
windows to run.
I see the reg fix is already posted, so you're all set there.

<snip>

By default, Start > Run shows the last command executed. It *shouldn't*
actually do anything unless you click the OK button. But with Windows,
"shouldn't" doesn't always mean "never will."

If you want to clear all of the past entries from the Run box (along
with various other things, including "My Recent Documents"), right-click
on the Start button, click "Properties," click the "Start Menu" tab,
click "Customize," select the "Advanced" tab, and on the bottom, under
the heading "Recent documents," click the "Clear List" button.

As Lem pointed out, items visible in the Run box are just "old memories".
They don't do anything. You really have to delete the registry value I gave
you.
