I need to backup the XP system registry and am having
dificulty finding the backup utility. Norton Antivirus
give the following instruction: 'Click
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Backup'
When I do this there is no "Backup" utility option
shown. Can anyone provide guidance on how to accomplish
this task? Thanks

To backup the registry use System Restore. Go to Start->Help and
Support->Pick a task and click on System Restore

Rick,

If you want to backup a specific portion of the registry, you can export to a REG file for backup. For full backup, you may consider System Restore or NTBACKUP System state.
