System 32 (for another user)

Hi: I have a Dell 4550 running Windows XP Home. My problem is one that I
have had in the past, System 32 Window opens upon logging in. In the past I
have fixed this problem using MS Knowledge Base Article 170086. This time,
however, the Window pops up when my daughter (an authorized user, but not an
adminstrator) logs on. Three other login accounts work fine on the same
computer work fine, including mine (the administrator), but when she logs in,
she gets the System 32 Window. As I have said I have tried the techniques in
the knowledge base article, logged in as her, but it doesn't fix the problem
as it has in the past for myself. Any ideas?

Hi,

Could you please export and post the contents of this key in the registry
while logged on as that user:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the plus (+) signs to reach this key.
Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then save to the
desktop. Once you have saved the key, close the registry editor. Right-click
the saved file on the desktop, choose edit, it should open in notepad. Click
edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to this post and click in the
message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the contents, then send the post for
examination.

Here is the export of the registry key you asked for:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
@=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,57,00,49,00,4e,00,44,00,4f,00,57,00,53,00,5c,00,53,\
00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,00,00
"AIM"="C:\\Program Files\\AIM\\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl"

@=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,57,00,49,00,4e,00,44,00,4f,00,57,00,53,00,5c,00,53,\
00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,00,00

The above resolves to "c:\WINDOWS\System32\", which is actually causing the
problem.

Type this command in Start, Run:

REG DELETE "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /ve /f

Or, delete the (default) value in the registry manually (using Regedit.exe)

Wondering why the @ value was modified. BTW: I have AOL IM (older version)
and I don't see this problem.

They are in the midst of testing a new version, and I understand it includes
a browser - perhaps this is the source of the problem.
