Syetem Restore files missing

I have Windows XP Home Edition and noticed that the daily
system checkpoint is not being taken (whole of DEcember)
and there are no previous months checkpoints. I have
checked that the check box is cleared so it is active and
I have 40GB of free space.
Any ideas, I can create manual checkpoints?
