System Restore

I have tried several times to restore my system to an earlier date, and I
keep receiving the following message:

"Your computer cannot be restored to Friday May 02, 2008
System Checkpoint
No changes have been made to your computer
To choose another restore point, restart System Restore"

I have tried a few of the available dates in the month of May as well but
without success.

Can you suggest ways I can try to resolve this problem? I have used System
Restore in the past without any problem.

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 Desktop computer with Windows XP Operating
System - Home Edition - Service Pack 2, Pentium 111 processor at 930 MHZ, 20
GB Hard Drive and 512 MB of RAM. The file system is FAT 32.

Many thanks for your co-operation and advice in this respect.

Gerry:

Thanks for your response.

I have Avast! AntiVirus, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Windows Firewall. It was
after running Ad-Aware yesterday that I tried to use System Restore because
it would not remove the Tracking Cookies, and the only way I could get out of
the program was to tell it to ignore same. I didn't want the 34 Tracking
Cookies in my system and tried to fix by calling up System Restore from an
earlier date. As advised, this did not work.

An event that may have some bearing on this problem is that approximately a
month ago I had my Norton AntiVirus program replaced with Avast! AntiVirus.
I also had some memory added at the same time.

Anything you can offer me in the way of a solution would be very much
appreciated. I am somewhat nervous and a novice where System Restore is
involved and would request your indulgence in walking me through any method
of resolving this.

Many thanks.

Avast! will interfere with System Restore when run in normal mode. You can boot
into Safe Mode and run System Restore or do the following;

Right click on the avast! icon in the notification area.
Select Program Settings from the menu that pops up.
Note: You can also go to the Start menu and launch avast! Antivirus. From the
avast! Simple User Interface, click on Menu in the top left hand corner.
In avast! Settings, click on Troubleshooting in the left hand column.
Under Troubleshooting, put a check mark in the box next to Disable avast!
self-defense module. Remember to uncheck this box after completing System
Restore.

On a side note, I saw a comment that this problem with avast! will be fixed in
the next version which is currently being beta tested.

Good luck

Many thanks. The matter is now resolved. It was the anti-virus software
that was blocking the System Restore.

Many thanks. The matter is now resolved.

As you indicated, it was the anti-virus software that was blocking the
System Restore and your instructions rectified the problem. Thanks again.
