swapping hard drives more problems

Ok, thanks for all the info. I've installed my old hard drives into the
newer computer and it says that it has a problem booting. it asks to boot
from cd, so i put in my windows xp disk and push enter. It reads the disk
and then the screen goes black. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Can you provide more detail in what it is you are trying to do? I gather
from the inflection in your posting - you assume we've all been involved in
some other posting with you?

If you are posting a reply always be sure to REPLY to an existing post,
otherwise it isn't obvious to others what you are replying to.

For those who want to know the thread, this should have been posted to the
thread "swapping hard drives" started by gregnic17 yesterday.

Your post doesn't
make clear exactly what's happening. Windows
won't fully boot? The computer can't find anything
to boot? A PC doesn't ask to boot from a CD, but
if you've got a bad configuration it could show a
message like "Insert valid system disk." I've forgotten
the exact wording of that, but it means that none
of your bootable drives (usually floppy, CD, disk, in
that order) has anything bootable on them. So it's
asking you to put in a floppy or CD.

Are you familiar with the BIOS? You should have
your bootable hard disk set in the boot order. You
should also have it set as master. And make sure
all the plugs are tightly pushed in on the drives.
And note that there are two ways to set the master:
via cable select or via actual master pin position.
Either way you need the connector on the pins right
on both disks.

You also didn't mention whether you *have* a
bootable OS on the 60/40 pair. If you're setting
one disk with XP at the front of the disk as master
in the new PC then it should boot.

Although you probably meant this as reply to another message, you
started a new thread instead of replying. Then you made matters worse,
by not quoting the message you were replying to (as I did above).

The result is that nobody knows what you are talking about, so nobody
can help you. Please find your old thread, and *reply* to it. And
please make sure you quote what's gone on before.
