svchost problem

I have a problem with the speed of my windows xp pc. It was running fine,
then I installed SQL Server 2005 developer edition It is quite an old pc,
and was not really up to the job of running it, but I only needed to test
something quickly so I installed it. The PC was then very slow, so when I
had tested what I wanted to, I removed it. I now find that the PC is still
running slowly, and task manager reports svchost.exe, a network service,
consuming between 40 and 99% of CPU, even when the PC is idle. If I close
the process, the PC immediately shuts down
I have run Sysinternals Process Explorer, which shows Hardware
Interrupts at about 15% CPU, DPCs at about 10% and svchost at about 30%. If
I suspend svchost, all 3 go back to zero and the pc appears to run at normal
speed, although I can no longer use the applications that I want to. Under
properties / services it shows RpcSs, C:\Windows\System32\rpcss.dll. I have
explored google groups for a solution, and have tried disabling automatic
updates, scanning for the blaster worm / spyware and using system restore to
go back to a point before I installed SQL server. No virus / spyware was
found and the others had no effect. I should add that the pc has never been
used on the internet, although it is connected via a network to a pc that
is. What else could be causing this - it is making my PC unusable? Thanks in
advance.

I found that article yesterday before I posted here and I had already
installed KB927891 but it made no difference. I had not installed the
Windows Update Agent before, but I have now and I still have the same
problem. As I mentioned before, the PC is not connected to the internet, so
I have disabled automatic updates. I have also discovered that even when the
PC is idle, the light on my network card is flashing as if data is being
transferred. If I remove the network cable from the card, the svchost.exe
service immediately goes back to 0% CPU. Does this suggest that it is
hardware related, or it is continually looking for something on another PC?
Thanks for your help.

See if this applies to the issue, Andy :

When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to
applications that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that
involve the Svchost.exe process

Is the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent and KB927891
installed ? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

It seems to have gone away! After spending most of today trying various
things I used Process Explorer to find which thread was causing the problem.
It seemed to be rpcrt4.dll. A search on google for this mentioned something
about network cards. As I had already determined that the problem went away
if I removed the network cable, I uninstalled my network card from device
manager, then rebooted. Windows detected and reinstalled the card, and the
problem had cleared. So I don't really know why, but at least it's working!

That's good to know, Andy. At least it was not some 'Thing' that had
infested the system.
Nice work !
