Svchost - Round 2

Earlier on Saturday, I had a post here about issues with svchost.exe maxing
out the CPU on an old Compaq 5340. Well, it's back. Sort of... Only
certain tasks will really set it off now, such as installing software. When
I went to install Norton Systemworks 2003 (just installed the A/V actually),
the CPU maxed out from the svchost again, and the installation of Norton
completely stalled out until I killed the svchost process. When I killed
the svchost process, the installation went on. I disabled automatic Windows
Updates to see if that would help any, as by looking at it, the automatic
Windows Updates utilizes an svchost.exe process. I'll give you an update
with clearer details later of what's going on with it this time.

Dont use Nortons for anti-virus. Use one of many free anti-virus apps.
instead.

I was going to. I was using Avast! as I much prefer it over Norton, (and it
even has picked up more viruses than Norton as well as not as bloated) but
Avast! ended up making the situation worse, and the entire computer got
unresponsive, as well as the avast.setup file consistently coming up and
bogging that old computer down. It would never complete an update with
Avast. Now I use Avast on all my other computers, including the one that
I'm typing on right now.

IIRC, someone replied to your previous post recommending you to d/l
ProcessExplorer from sysinterals.com. Did you do that ?

With that utility, you are able to easily look inside each svchost process
to see what services it is hosting.

You can then turn the services off that are hosted by that particular
svchost one-by-one to find out which is the culprit.

When you do that, you will have a better chance of getting this figured
out.
