I have read the previous posts and am not yet getting a solutions t our
problem.
Here is our situation.:
We rolled some windows updates this week on XP pro SP3 machines via WSUS.
Since then most machines on the network are staring up and then the SVCHOST
process grab the cpu to 100% for about five minutes then it releases and the
machines in question will work for sometime and then the svchost process will
fire again.
I have noted also that outlook seem to be most affected application it
freezes up when this svchost begins it's cycle.

I did a tasklist and found that on all these machines this process controls
the following process:

svchost.exe 1072 AudioSrv, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, Dhcp,
dmserver, ERSvc, EventSystem, helpsvc,
lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, Netman,
Nla, RasMan, Schedule, seclogon, SENS,
SharedAccess, ShellHWDetection, TapiSrv,
TrkWks, W32Time, winmgmt, wuauserv, WZCSVC

Any ideas on the way forward?

Use Process Explorer to try to determine which Service is using the CPU.
wuauserv (Windows Update) is commonly implicated but you have a number of
services to eliminate.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
