SVCHOST.EXE uses 99% CPU

Trond Svendsen

The past few months, me and my colleagues has experienced that
SVCHOST.EXE is maxing out at 99%. The SVCHOST.EXE is running the
following processes:

svchost.exe
AudioSrv, Browser, CryptSvc, Dhcp, dmserver,
ERSvc, EventSystem,
FastUserSwitchingCompatibility, helpsvc,
Irmon, lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation,
Netman, Nla, RasMan, Schedule, seclogon,
SENS, SharedAccess, ShellHWDetection,
TapiSrv, Themes, TrkWks, W32Time, winmgmt,
wscsvc, wuauserv, WZCSVC

Is this something that can be remedied?

Hi,

This is due to Windows Update and the recent introduction of WSUS 3.0 etc.
Read more on the WSUS team blog here:
http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archive/2007/04/28/update-on.aspx

1) You need to load the new update client:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

2) Then this patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=927891

After applying the above updates - svchost still runs high CPU usage *but*
not 100% only 88 - to 97 % and drops down more often. The PC is quite
responsive compared to the old 100% lockups.

So, if you disable the automatic Windows Update, the issue will resolve
itself? And then make sure to run a manual Windows Update i.e. once a week?

Dear Trond,

Several of my clients today had this problem. Lots of phone calls. This
seems to be due to the WSUS servers I use for their networks pushing out
"something" last night.

Solution was tricky, as I could log on remotely to each client and only had
25 seconds to stop the Automatic Update service!! :-| I then loaded the 3.0
client then the KB927891.

On reboot, svchost was "high" but PC was responsive. This is normal acording
to the WSUS team.....
So that's all you need to do.
1. Get in using Remote access RDP or VNC whatever.
2. As _fast_ as possible stop the Automatic Update service.
3. Load the 3.0 client
4. load the KB927891
5. Reboot.

Done.

ok?
