svchost.exe

Hi,

Every time my computer starts up I get a message that svchost.exe had an
error. I click the "send" button to report the error to Microsoft and then
I'm directed to the "known problems" web page which instructs me to apply an
update. I do, everything goes through successfully and then I get the exact
same error at the next startup. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do
? This error is driving me crazy as it sometimes doesn't allow my computer
to shut down gracefully.

Thanks,
Curt

Hi Curt,
Do you have up to date AV installed and your Computer clean from
Malwares/Viruses, if yes proceed to this.
You may have winsock problem on your system. If I understood right, please
go to
this link and try to repair the winsock;
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q321024
for winsock tool repair;

Nass,
Yes, I am running AVG Virus protection which I installed before connecting
to the Internet. Also, I am very careful about preventing viruses on my
computer and I can say with %99.99 surety that this is not a virus problem.
I just purchased XP 2 weeks ago so this is a completely new install and I am
very disappointed with it so far. I switched from 200 which I had been
running for the past 8 years or so without any problems and I think that XP
is going to send me back kicking and screaming.

I will try your suggestions and let you know what I find.

Hi Nass,
I removed the registry entries and it seemed to fix the problem however,
the registry change completely blew out my networking. The wireless,
ethernet and firewire stopped working altogether. I did a system restore to
2 days ago and the networking came back up.

What else could I try ?

Thanks,
Curt

Hi Curt,
Do you have Scanner installed or USB Storage Devices, if yes what is the
manufacturer and the version.
Did you update your XP from microsoft website and got the latest patches,
this could sort the problem sometimes if not hardware related.
Hear from you soon

Nass,

I have an hp officejet 5510 all-in-one installed. XP is from Microsoft and
"update" tells me that it is completely up to date.

Hi Curt,
Try to uninstall the printer from Add/Remove program or the Uninstall
utility came with the printer and then reboot and see if you will have the
Error message again.
Hope this helps
