svchost.exe: Virus? Solutions?

I've been away for a few weeks, and have not been able to follow this and related threads recently.
When I last considered it, it seems like there were a variety of solutions, and the blame for the
behavior was attributed to a virus, Welchia, I believe. Maybe Blaster. I've run a virus scan on my
computer and can find no viruses. As for the solutions, I see people have offered installing the
latest W2000 SP (service pack), installing DCombulator, and who knows what else. Is there a web site
that deals with all the proposed solutions? I find it odd that I didn't have this trouble until I
upgraded to W2000 from NT about 2 months ago. Well, I'm going to install DCombobulator. I was on my
way to do this before I encountered the svchost problem.

So what IS your problem? You don't say. What about svchost.exe? Is it
that it is making connections that you don't understandy why, or is it
that you don't know what svchost.exe is used for (see
http://snurl.com/svchost)? Do you know about NT services? Have you
check what services you have running (and checking their properties to
see what program gets called or loaded to run that service)?

Almost missed your message. The problem is the typical one. W2000 isues a
msg that svchost.exe is about to die, and asks OK. I don't believe this is
a virus on my system (I've done scans with two different checkers recently).
If not, what is the solution? More importantly, what is the cause? Since I
posted, I think I'm probably going in the right direction. I need to install
SP 4 for starters. I'll wait a few days and see if that works. If not, then
I will use DCOMbobulator. It won't successfull operate without a recent SP.
I should have a better grip on this in a few days after installing SP4.
