svchost error

G

Guest

I have read through the svchost articles and can't find my particular
problem. I'm running Windows XP on my laptop and whenever I start it up I
get the following svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x009996bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be "written".
Click OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

I have tried both OK and Cancel and I can't get it from coming up everytime
I start the computer. Is there anything wrong with my computer? If not, is
there anyway to get rid of this error?

I get this exact same error, mostly related to trying to do something in IE.
I am running IE 6.0 SP2.

A little background:

My computer was off for about 3 months while I moved. When I got back on 3
days ago, I needed to update my Norton Anti-virus, so I upgraded to the 2006
version. While my computer was down, I also had purchased an HP Phostosmart
2710 all-in-one printer when I installed. I then went about updating my
Windows XP with the latest updates. The next day when I got on line I
started getting this error. Later I started getting "Generic Host Process
for Win32" errors. I thought I fixed that with one of the Windows updates
(non critical) and by going into services in adminstrative tools and setting
the WIA item to manual from automatic (I first tried off, but HP suggested to
manual). Still later I started getting lock ups and finally got a CHKDSK
error. CHKDSK seemed to fix the problem and I have not had any more lock ups
or crashes. My sole remaining problem is this svchost.exe - Application
error. It seems everytime I try to look for an internet address in my drop
down window of IE, there is a long delay followed by this error. I close the
error and a few seconds later the drop down bar appears and all is ok for a
little while. There are other times when the error pops up, but it is almost
always related to trying to do someting with an address or a new page in IE.

As Dave suggested, I looked at my event viewer, but what it says:

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x009996bc.

I have received 13 of them in the hour I have been online this morning and
all error messages are the same, as well as the last 10 or so I received last
night.

This is not a deal killer, but it is a royal pain in the patootie.

Thanks for the help.

When you view the logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the
right-hand pane) in the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to
clipboard, then you can paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Thanks. I found another message somewhere to run something from the command
prompt (I feel stupid because I cannot remember what it was right now or
where I found it :( ). It ran and said I need to reboot and (knock on wood),
I have not had another error pop up.

Thank you for trying to help.

I'm having the same issue. Would be greatly helpful to know what you ran from
the command prompt. I've tried editing my registry, etc. I've run every fom of
spyware / adware scanner and found nothing. As i side note i read that on
32 bit systems if youhave DMA enabled on drives it can cause this error in
WSP2. I have tried changing my settings to PIO. No change in problem status.

Any help would be great.

I'm sorry I posted the orignal question and then my husband took my laptop to
California. I now have it back and have read through the responses and don't
understand any of them but the last one. Can you explain what the "Event

Thank you
