svchost error message

lately i've been getting a error message at startup, "Generic Host Process
for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close", on both of my
computers. i've read various things about it, but none of the solutions have
worked. anything new on this annoying error. everything seems to work okay.
have no problems browing explorer, computer shuts down fine, etc. just
starting to nag me that you get it once in awhile.

This matching event displays information about the specific error that
occurred. Have you looked for this matching error?

Are there any error in the Application section of Event Viewer
indicating a programme has crashed?

Usually when it says faulting module unknown means some spyware or scumware
on your computer. Get Spybot or Adaware and run them. Be sure to get the
latest updates before running them.

Ricky, i have run Spybot, Ad Aware, Microsoft Anti Spy and a plethora of
other scans and i have nothing at all, yet i get the same message. It seems
that this all kicked off since the updates before the newest one recently. (I
think it was about 10 updates together a few weeks ago). That is when this
started happening to me.

I have started seeing this message on fresh loads of Windows XP SP2. The
errors start after downloading the 10 most recent hot fixes. I think I have
it narrowed down to KB887472 (MSN update) or KB887742 (Windows XP update). I
will keep you posted when I am positive which one it is.

I had instant problems after installing KB887742 (Windows XP update).
BSOD, critical errors to name a few since uninstalling it the troubles
have gone.

I have the same problem. I think that the KB887742 windows critical update
conflicts with Norton Antivirus 2005. It occurs randomly with me on bootup
on my home XP computer. As soon as I installed Norton antivirus 2005 on my
office computers, the same problem showed up on 2 out of 3 WindowsXP
computers after rebooting. All of the computers with the problem had
windows update KB 887742 installed.

I wonder if Microsoft knows of the problem?

I just got the error again after uninstalling KB 887742, so that isn't the
problem update. anyone know which update is causing the svchost crashes?
