Suddenly can't log on to XP Home....HELP PLEASE!!!

Hi
I turned on my PC as normal last night and everything was fine until the log
on page. i clicked on my user icon as normal and it said loading personal
prefferences etc then it flashed and came up with the loggin out screen
ready to shut down!!!
As far as i know nothing has been changed in settings etc prior to this, no
one else has access to the PC and now i can't get on the machine!!
I have several items for sale on ebay, plus ongoing business email that i
desperately need to get access to.
Is there anything anyone can suggest to help with this problem please.

Hi Kev

Try this:

Reboot your PC and then keep tapping F8 to try and access a screen that has
'Last Known Good Configuration' as an option. See if that helps. If not,
try and access the same screen again to try a System Restore via Safe Mode.

Hi all
I have tried the "safe mode" startup gut it still gives the user icon at
startup and then clicking on this results in the same thing.....also when
started in last good startup...same...arghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
I did see a thread somewhere about adware corruptinguserinit.exe and
wsaupdater.exe files but i have no idea on how to repair these or copy then
from the cd as given in this thread.
Can you help further with idiots guide please?

Hi,

This is the solution O would use, please see below

1. Insert your Windows XP CD.
2. Restart the machine.
3. Press the key specified to enter your BIOS. In most cases you need to
press Del to enter the BIOS setup. You should see a message on startup, right
in the beginning, which says something like “press <key> to enter setupâ€.
E.g. Press Del to enter setup.
4. Go into either the Boot section, if you have one, or the 2nd option
(should be something like “BIOS features setup†or “Advanced BIOS featuresâ€).
5. Change to boot sequence (should show as “boot sequence†or first boot
device; 2nd boot device; 3rd boot device; etc.) so that CD-ROM is first.
6. Exit saving changes.
7. When you see the message to press any key to boot from CD, press any key.
8. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press Enter to do a clean install.
9. Press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
10. Press Esc to perform a clean installation. (If this option is not
available, skip to the next step.)
11. Press Enter to install to the selected drive.
12. Press C to continue if prompted.
13. When prompted to format, select the option to “Leave the current file
system in tact†and press Enter.
14. At the next screen, press Esc to change the directory.
15. Change the path to \WinXP
16. Press Enter.
17. Complete the installation.

I had this after using Kelly's quick launch reg fix. I couldn't find a
solution so just restored from a disk image file. Guess you will have to
do a windows repair from the CD.

corrupted by the removal of blazefind. It adds wsaupdater.exe to the logon
value in the system registry, sometimes appending it, sometimes replacing

but doesn't correct the registry damage. If this is the case, then you may
need to load the registry hive from another installation and change it. This
is the key:

but was not sure if i had done it correctly !!
When you say copy the userinit.exe file do you mean the userinit.ex_ from

Hi Kev,

No, from the Recovery Console, go into the C:\Windows\system32 folder and
copy userinit.exe as wsaupdater.exe

C:\Windows>CD\Windows\system32
C:\Windows\system32>copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Then restart normally. This should get you past the login, and you can
correct the registry entry that caused this in the first place.

Hi Kev,

Click start/run, type REGEDIT and click ok. Expand the branches to reach
this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on it, and then look in the right pane for the userinit string.
Double-click it. The userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

On the damaged installations it's one of these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

What you need to do is change it to the correct one, and don't forget to
include the trailing comma. You can close the registry editor at this point,
and delete the wsaupdater.exe file in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

accounts and go to ebay using that?

As for as ebay is concerned i managed that via another PC.

As for the registry thing i looked in that and it showed the userinit part
as C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe

It also had an entry for the C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe

As a novice i can't tell what should be there and what, if anthing, is
missing!!!

Can anyone help with details please?

Hi,

I would suggest that if you have no CD capable of loading the Recovery
Console, and cannot load a floppy set, that you bring the unit to a computer
professional that can load and edit the registry using BartPE or similar
tool (they are not for the novice).
