Sudden loss of connectivity?

Home wireless network: Motorola cable modem to Dlink 524 router serving 2 P4
laptops (Dlink cardbus adapters) and 1 P4 desktop (Dlink USB adapter) with
dynamic addressing. All running winXP and all working fine until couple days
ago when desktop could no longer access internet.

Desktop ipconfig reports 0.0.0.0 for ip address. Ipconfig localhost works.
Desktop can see network, but USB adapter utility reports "no signal". 3hrs
with dlink tech support unproductive. I've tried everything I can think of:
reinstall network components, reinstall drivers, netshell utility. I updated
winxp from home to pro on desktop. Network connection repair doesn't work.
Ipconfig release doesn't work; ipconfig renew times out. Assigning static IP
address didn't work. WinXP restore to condition prior to problem did not work.

Both laptops work fine. Placed one laptop with cardbuss next to desktop and
received strong signal. Last night, plugged USB adapter into same laptop and
worked fine. Seems to rule out dlink as problem. Suspect problem with TCP/IP
(or winsock?), but don't know where to go from here. Suggestions?

You're not alone.
I'm using Linksys, BEFSR41, and WRT54GS routers, and got same message,
Mine happened at beginning of large snow storm, so I thought it was weather
related.
Called ISP tech support, and got MS' KB884020 patch. Was told that SP2
causes this issue. Still no good. Followed all instructions by tech support,
from Linksys, and ISP. nada....
Would really appreciate it if someone who wrote XP SP 2 would resolve this,
because patch did not solve, nor has anything else. Am now running on open
wireless connection. Am about ready to reset entire system.
Only seems to be off of WRT54GS. Hardwire connection is fine.
ISP tech stated that he--he had same issue, used same routers-- updated
firmware, and it solved his problem with this. When Linksys questioned, they
disavowed and said it would not solve issue.
Dell's only option is to revert to previous configuration. Not an option
here.
So, again... MS techs.... fix this. It's irritating, and time consuming, as
cannot stay online long enough to stop issue.
Windows seems to throw keys away within 5 minutes after being input. Must
then re-input key, do twice-- not standard, but go through inserting key,
clicking ok, to properites window, and network connections window, then
re-open properties window, and insert key again-- and then after 5 minutes,
repeat-- over, and over........ and over...... and over.... Ad infinitum.
This obviously kills internet connection each time. So the process can be
extremely tedious, and frustrating. Talk about sisyphus and his boulder. ....

Please provide detail behind "Desktop can see network". What do you do, and
what do you see? How about the laptop?

What Netshell ("netsh") subcommands did you try? There are lots of
possibilities, being specific here might help.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Chuck, thx for response.

When I open the dlink USB adapter utility for the desktop, the utility can
see the router SSID and settings, however, it reports the signal strength as
"no signal." XP network connections properties (advanced) doesn't see the
router under "available networks" even though I have the router entered under
preferred networks.

I used Netshell to reset the TCP/IP stack (netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt).

The winsock links you included are next on my list of stuff to do. And I
have the winsock fix exe. Wasn't aware of the LSP fix. I'll try all that
tonite. Then its probably time to wipe the drive and reinstall.

Whats frustrating is I can put my laptop right next to the desktop, plug in
the USB adapter and presto I have full connectivity to the router in the
other room. Makes me believe it isn't a dlink problem.

I don't understand why an LSP / Winsock corruption should affect signal strength
either. Have you checked the drivers - controller and device on both computers
- do you have the same driver versions? Any other devices sharing the bus on
the desktop?

Following Occam's Razor, though, if nothing else works, try an LSP / Winsock
fix. All three programs provide the same functionality - I can't say which one
is more likely to work in your case. Fortunately, they're all free, and none
are complicated to install or run. I'd sure try those before re-installing XP.

Chuck, I don't understand either. Have checked, reinstalled all drivers.
Versions are identical. No other devices sharing the desktop bus.

I ran winsockxpfix.exe, also netsh winsock reset catalog, then reinstalled
tcp/ip. Still nothing. Time to toss this desktop out the window (pardon the
pun) or wipe/reinstall xp.
