network adapter won't "acquire a network address"

Hi all,

I seem to only know enough about computers to be dangerous :)

I'm running windows xp, and until a couple of days ago all was well.
I have a dlink wireless network, with my desktop Dell connected to the
Motorola surfboard modem, and a Dell laptop connected to the dlink. I
don't think anything has changed (no new installs or hardware), except
that sometime in the last couple of days Windows automatically ran
an update and restarted my computer.

I have a cable internet connection, but the desktop can't acquire a
network address. The laptop is connecting fine, I'm posting using it,
but when I boot up the desktop, the network connections icon in the
systray is stalled on "Acquiring Network Address". I've taken the
dlink completely out of the picture, couldn't connect. Recycled the
modem, no luck. Removed the adapter from the hardware list and
reinstalled it, no luck. Restarted a bazillion times, same problem.

I'm not sure what else to try. I've spoken to the ISP and they say
everything is fine at their end, that there could be a hardware
problem with my adapter. I tried installing it using the USB cable it
came with instead of the ethernet that used to work, still no luck. I
set everything back to my original configuration and am at a loss what
to do next.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
karen :)

You may want to install the lastest NIC driver. These search results may help,

Acquiring network address
When that happens, the LAN icon in the tray shows "Acquiring network address". The ipconfig command receives 0.0.0.0 IP address. ...

Thanks for getting back to me Robert. I've spent way too many hours,
trying everything I could find to try (hoping I didn't make anything
worse!). I finally ended up using Windows XP Recovery...and
immediately created a "Restore Point"!

So far, so good.

Cheers,
Karen

p.s. When booting from CD, and choosing "Repair" I was asked to enter
an Administrator's password--something that was never set, so had no
idea to how to find it. This page was VERY helpful:
