Sudden inability to browse internet

Mathew

Hello all,

Win 2k professional, DSL connection, 3 computers on local network behind
Sonicwall firewall.

Computer "A" has suddenly lost the ability to browse the internet. That is,
I was surfing this morning with no problem when it suddenly went to the
default dnserror.htm page.

I double checked the settings, released/renewed IP settings, deleted and
reinstalled the network adapter, swapped network cables and changed hub
ports, all to no avail. Computer "A" can browse and connect to local
computers just fine, but errors when I try to access a website.

I am not able to ping external sites by either domain name or IP address.
But I AM able to ping local local names & addresses.

The other two computers on the local network can still access the internet
(with the exact same DHCP provided settings as Computer A).

Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA
Mathew

Sounds like your default gateway has gone south. Can
you ping Google by IP address?

Since yesterday I tried to ping outside sites by IP address without success,
I was about to say "no" to pinging Google by IP. But figured what the heck,
I'll try again.

So I turned on Computer A (after being shut down all night), and everything
is now working fine. I might add that I did try rebooting several times
yesterday.

I wonder what the difference is in turning it off for 11-12 hours, versus a
couple hours? Could overheating possibly cause this kind of problem? The
world may never know . . .

Thanks!

Mathew
