Subject: Logon to XP is VERY SLOOOOOW

J

Jose P. Gisone

Hello All,

Problem Description:
--------------------
When logging onto a particular computer which runs Windows
XP, the logon process is exceptionally slow.

Got a machine at home (not mine - it's my folks) that is
extremely sloooooow to log in after you click on the name
of the user you want to get in as. By slow I mean it takes
over 15 minutes from the time you click on the user name to
the time that all the Desktop icons finish displaying.
Subsequently, it takes many more minutes (10 - 15) for
items in the system tray to load (e.g., the clock, the
Volume icon, McAfee, etc.)
After that, it takes a very long time to do anything. For
example, it takes about 20 seconds for the Run dialog to
display after I click on Start > Run, and about 40 seconds
for Notepad to load if I just type in "notepad" in the Run
dialog and hit <Enter>.

System Description:
-------------------
The machine is a Dell Dimension 4550 running Windows XP,
with a P4 2GHz processor, 640MB RAM, and about 40GB of free
disk space. So I don't think lack of hardware resources is
the issue.
FYI, I did go into System Setup and the CMOS does seem to
recognize that all 640MB of RAM is there.

Attempted Solutions:
--------------------
When booting up in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Network
Enabled, it is as fast as you would expect - very. I tried
running defragmenter on it (while it was in Safe Mode) but
it didn't improve the situation noticeably when starting it
up normally.
Also while I was in Safe Mode, I noticed that Device
Manager was showing that the device 'Visual NDMonitor' was
not working properly (it's under the Non Plug and Play
Drivers list), so I disabled it. Again, this did not
improve the login situation when starting up normally.

If anyone has suggestions on how to go about fixing this,
I'd be most grateful.

Thank you and best regards,
Jose P. Gisone

No help I am afraid. I have exactly the same problem with a Dell Inspiron
1150. I have found two other 1150 owners with the same slow downs. Please
post here if you get to a solution, I will do the same.

You could try rolling back your processor driver. This works for Inspiron
1150s so may not be applicable to your Dimension 4550. The Dell community
forums are worth a visit for machine specific information.
