Stupid Question?

Is a power sytem in your PC the same as a UPS? I am having a PC built
and it will have a 535W power supply...Thanks

That's not a stupid question. Humorous, to be sure, but not stupid.

The computer's power supply transforms the voltage from the wall socket into
the voltages your computer needs. The UPS (uninterruptable power supply) is
essentially a battery that will continue to supply power to your computer
during a blackout. You need both.

The power supply is built into the computer. The UPS is separate from the
computer.

A UPS is a backup battery power supply that allows you a few minutes to shut
down your PC properly during a power outage.

The 535W power supply is what supplies electricity to the components in your
system.

And, by the way, what in heaven's name do you need 535 watts for?

Future needs and not wishing to run a component flat-out I'd imagine.
Quite sensible provided it's not a cheap piece if sh&t.

Quite true... I have an Enermax 550 Watt in this one. It's pretty with
glowing lights which is pretty stupid really but sexy none the less. The
additional wattage is good for the half dozen USB ports, the two drives, the
video card, the sound card, the system monitor, the card reader, the
external drive, the few fans, the lights inside, the Zip drive, the...
Well... I guess that's about it actually... And yes, I use a UPS (really
it's just a battery backup to be honest) with this system.

Sorry......I was telling you all about the PC I am having built when I
accidently hit send.....To answer your question Ani.......A 550 W Power
Supply is what they recommend for that processor...I probably don't need
that PC with all the bells and whistles when I have to ask a difference
between a power supply and UPS..But I want to thank you all for your
kind replies.

That is a nice computer. Take good care of it. Feed it regularly and keep it
warm. The bottom of this post will contain some free stuff seeing as you
just blew you life savings on hardware. I hope you got a see-through side
panel at least so you can look at the pretty parts. It's a must have. Lights
are good too. For about $50 USD you can add an Enermax System Monitor with
card reader, SATA inputs, firewire, and USB 2.0 as well as dual fan controls
and the added bonus is you'll be able to read any card on the market for the
next six months until they have a new type of flash memory available. Oh,
and it's sexy too. You can't beat that!

Anyhow, here's some free goodies for you...

Before cleaning download this:

LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Use that should cleaning out your PC remove or damage your in-place winsock
and you can't connect to the internet.

From the virus and trojan category pick one application, they're all free,
download it and install it. Make sure that you update it. From the spyware
category pick all three, download them and update them to the latest
definitions. Reboot, press the F8 key over and over again, from the menu
select Safe mode without networking. Do your cleaning in there. Reboot to
regular mode and run the scans again. This isn't going to be quick or easy
but it might just solve your problems and it should prevent you from further
problems so long as you keep them updated and scan often. Most of them can
be enabled to update and scan automatically.

Ignore the last part unless, of course, you're actually infected... In that
case the last little bit is pretty handy.

A power supply that strong will do all that plus run your toaster on the
dark setting (which I prefer).

It might even do the coffee pot which would mean that I could sit up even
longer. :) Needless to say the lights and all the extra stuff take quite a
bit of power. Truth be told I probably bought it more for the pretty lights
than any other reason other than the whole, "What if?" reasoning.

Ever seen one of those cigarette lighters that fit in a CD drive bay?

I have and come to think of it I have one more bay open though I'd thought
about mounting something sexy there. I wonder if they make 'em with pretty
lights? I was wondering about a thumbprint reader (I haven't a real use for
one it would just be cool) that would fit there. Though there's this
iEV-Stream Video Magician that would look really nice and would give me a
few features I could actually use... Hmm... I suppose I could just leave it
empty until I find something I really want which will probably be long after
I've found a new case and bought a couple of new computers. It's a bit of a
problem as you can see... I'm admitted hardware/internet junkie. There's
surely going to be a 12-Step program developed for people like me though
with my luck it will be held at OfficeMax or online somewhere...

I was wondering about a thumbprint reader

And if the print does not match a big, sharp spike shoots up through
the bottom of your computer chair <g>.

Do you trust the technology with your nads?
