Stupid question

Guys 'n' Gals,

Sorry to be so dumb but I've been out of the loop for so long that I
certainly don't know and I've Googled generally and in this group
without success.

I bought a copy of MSO Pro pretty much when it was released and I've
been using it since. My wife also used it at work. She's now changed
jobs and has Word 2002 (from Office XP). I was trying to establish
whether the file formats are compatible or not. I can find no
information but the general inference I'm picking up is that they (and
2003 for that matter) are compatible. Can this really be so? Can I
really open a document (or spreadsheet or presentation) created by
Office XP (or 2003) in my creaking old 2000 versions?

Yes, they are compatible. The basic file format hasn't changed since
Word 97. There are some features in the newer versions that won't look
the same when you open the documents in Word 2000, but the docs will
be usable.

Yes, they are compatitable... if someone is creating something that will be
sent to a pre-1997 version though, you can check a box in the options to
dis-enable any function that won't be compatible (e.g. editing the background
of a document).
