Stuck at startup

My son is running windows xp professional and when the
computer is turned on, it runs a disk check and comes
into the screen stating that windows was closed
improperly. No matter which mode is chosen the computer
returns to the warning screen. How do we access the
restore system? The blue welcome screen is not seen.

When Starting up hold down F8. This should give you a menu. Select Last
Known Good Configuration.
If that doesnt work, follow the same procedure and select Safe Mode
