Strange XP Startup Box

I have a computer running XP Home. Recently a dialog box appeared with the
yellow warning symbol and a yes and no box at the windows welcome screen. No
other text was in the box. Weather I clicked yes or no windows would still
boot. Now it has changed to a red cross with the same buttons but won't let
me boot into windows at all (other than safe mode). It just says it's
logging on then logging off and it's back to the same stupid box.
Can anyone help me with this????

Hi,

Did you check your computer for virus or spyware. Check the system with the
latest antivirus signatures and also with the removal tools like ad-aware or
spybot.

Chris: I am now having the exact same problem! Did you ever discover the
reason?
If so, please clue me in. I can't roll my machine back to earlier restore
states either.

I am having the same problem and can't start Windows! How would I go about
checking for spyware or viruses if I can't start my system? Can anyone
help??!!
