Strange user logon message

When I boot to the User logon window there is a message
next to my logon icon "20 unread messages".

This has not ever happened before (over 2 years). There
are no unread messages. I have deleted all of Deleted
Items and have five read message in the Inbox.

Windows XP is fully updated, my anti-virus likewise, my
XP firewall is enabled. I have scanned for any virus
presence. I have Office 2000 therefore Outlook 2000, both
are fully updated.

I am absolutely unable to determine what the problem is
or the cause.

Ideas/suggestions please. I may need to access the
registry to correct, any clues?

If you hover over the message it will tell you the email account in a tip. It's probably the hotmail addin for MS Messenger telling you your the hotmail unread count. If you right click messenger and can choose My Hotmail Inbox and it works then the addin is installed.

It only does the main accout too. If you changed accounts this can occur.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)

If you have not installed SP!, the earlier version can be found at

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

In Its Logon - Unread Mail is a check box - uncheck to turn this
facility off
