logon screen - unread mail message

Frequently I will have an unread mail message next to my
name on the XP logon screen. There is no unread mail.
What is causing this to appear and how do I change it?

Go to www.microsoft.com and search for TweakUI. It is one of Microsofts
Powertools (sorry i don't have the exact link to hand) Download this and
install it. Once installed open it and go through the options. You will find
an option that will disable the email alerts on the welcome screen. Tick
this and they will disappear. There are also other useful options for
'tweaking' your system.

There are a couple of options to correct this problem.

You can do so manually;

1) Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Create a Restore Point just to be in the safe side.

2) Start/Run/Regedit

HKey_current User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Unread
Mail

Delete "Message Count waiting".

3) Close Regedit and Reboot.

You can download Windows XP TweakUI to correct via a GUI interface;

1) Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Create a Restore Point just to be in the safe side.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once TweakUI is installed, navigate the tool;
- Logon
- Unread Mail

You will then have options you can set via the tool.

Hope this helps!

Supplementary to the others - using TweakUI, which I would get because
it has so many other uses, the download is at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
but that one will only work if you have installed SP1

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
