Strange Problem When Attempting Shutdown

Sam

This afternoon, while reading my email in Outlook Express, I needed to open
windows explorer to look for some information. However, each time I clicked
on the windows explorer icon, nothing would happen. I decided to shutdown
Outlook, disconnect from the internet, and reboot the computer. I then
started the shutdown procedure, clicked on the Restart Button, and then I
saw the following information in a small dialog box:

The title of the dialog box was, "END PROGRAM - Proxy Desktop" (have never
seen this before!!). The information below was as follows: "To return to
Windows and check the status of the program, click Cancel. If you choose to
end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data. To end the
program now, click End Now."

Twice I cancelled the computer shutdown and looked for any program on the
task bar that might be in operation, but did not see anything. I then tried
the third shutdown, clicked on the End Now button and the shutdown was then
without any problems that I could see. After I rebooted, I ran a scan with
Adaware SE Plus (has latest update) and NAV 2005 (has latest update), and
nothing was found. Also I could open windows explorer and any other program
without any difficulty.

I should note that I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP
Prof SP2 (with the latest cumulative security update for IE), NAV 2005,
BoClean (has latest update), and ZoneAlarm Plus (4.5.594). The above
problems are the first time I have encountered them. So far, I been able to
connect to the Internet and open windows explorer without any problems while
connected. I did a search on Google and did not find any applicable
information. So far at this point, I don't suspect any malware because I
surf the internet with much caution and always check on updates for NAV 2005
and BoClean as my first actions when first connecting to the internet.

Any suggestions and thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Sam.

a google search does indeed show little for what the program is, but you may
want to take a look at your running processes and note any processes that
have "proxy" in the name. Kill the process, and then do a file search for the
file. You should be able to take it from there.

Thanks very much for your reply. I did run task manager and did not see
anything with the "proxy" in any name. I also thought back and reviewed any
noticeable actions that I had taken that morning before connecting to the
internet. The only two different actions were as follows: very shortly
after booting up for the morning, I accomplished/checked out the
slipstreaming of windows XP Prof and SP2 (did not notice any problems with
this action). I then checked BoClean and NAV 2005 for updates. BoClean did
not have any but NAV 2005 had three updates (over one MBs in size), program,
virus definition, and I believe WMI. Did not see any problems with this
activity. Going back to the task manager, I do see three entries that don't
seem that familiar and will check them out (Isass.exe, SNDSrvc.ece, and
SPBBCSvc.exe). Thanks again, Sam.

I have seen this couple years ago when using Reget Deluxe.
I had to uninstall it to stop error.
