Strange IP

My WIN2000 is connected to a router that is suppossed to assign a dynamic ip
of range 192.168.2.XXX. Somethimes my WIN2000 machine picks up an ip like
169.x.x.x. When this happens the computer can not access the Internet or
coonect to othe PCs in the LAN. I don't know where the computer gets this
IP. What can I do to prevent the computer from picking up this 169.x.x.x IP
address?

Thanks in advance

It seems your router's DHCP server does not always work.
You can resolve it like so:
- Make a note of all addresses (IP, DNS, Default Gateway)
that you have when things work OK.
- Give yourself a fixed IP address, e.g. 192.168.2.10, and
set the other two addresses to the values you noted before.

That is because it is not contacting the Box for DHCP. Most often it is a
bad cable,...second most likely would be a bad port in the Nic or the Box.
In otherwords, it is most likey due to a bad physical connection, whatever
the specific cause it.

The 169 address is what MS product default to when they cannot find a DHCP
service.
