Lost IP address for NIC card

G

Gary

I am running windows 2000. Each day, the IP address of my
NIC is reset to either 0.0.0.0 or 169.x.x.x with no
default gateway. I am able to access the other machines
on the network, but I can no longer access the internet
through the router. The only way I can reset the IP
address for the NIC is to reboot the machine.

I have run anti-virus and spyware and CWShredder and
Adaware.

Thanks for anyhelp.

my dear friend you'r having, something called APIPA
(Automatic Private IP Addressing)Just follow this
information to disable Apipa and the problem will go away.
For Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003,
APIPA can be disabled by adding
the "IPAutoconfigurationEnabled" DWORD registry entry with
a value of 0x0 to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\
Parameters\Interfaces\<Adapter GUID>

Note The Adapter GUID subkey is a globally unique
identifier (GUID) for the computer's LAN adapter.

Specifying a value of 1 for IPAutoconfigurationEnabled
DWORD entry will enable APIPA, which is the default state
when this value is omitted from the registry

If there is only one listed, that would be it. It would not hurt to disable it on all
adapters if more than one is listed. I believe the support tool netdiag will list the
GUID. --- Steve
