Strange file missing

Recently I had msndxn.exe placed on my windows xp maching. I had it
removed using Prevx but everytime I boot a message appears on my
system saying that file W0042839.dll is missing. The system still
boots but this filename looks strange. Is there anything I need to be
concerned with and if not, how do I get rid of this annoying message?

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This will show you what's trying to load at Startup, and from where. The included Help gives some basic information on how to remove unwanted items.

I just did an msconfig and found that this filename appears to be a
parameter for rundll32.dll. Is that any help. I see now that it is
part of startup. But what do I do now?

BTW, I just noticed that activating rundll32.dll occurs TWICE in the
startup list. Can I safely deactivate the second call to rundll32?

That would depend on what its calling. RUNDLL32 is used to execute a DLL as an application. Some are useful and some can be malicious. Use the Startup Programs Tracker that I referenced and copy the results into a reply. Its generally not necessary to include the running processes and services sections.

A search for "msndxn.exe" brings up nothing which indicates that it was
probably malware. Apparently Prevx wasn't effective. Go through the
following malware removal steps systematically, doing all preparatory
work:

I beg to disagree. With mandn.exe and the other software on my system
removed I no longer have batch processing capability.

Where did "mandn.exe" come from? Your original post referenced something
called "msndxn.exe". And your posting makes it unclear whether you are
begging to disagree with me or with Doug. It doesn't matter. If you
don't want to scan for malware or do any of the troubleshooting we
suggested, then don't. It's your machine. A Google for "mandn.exe"
doesn't bring up anything either so I'm not sure why you think either
filename you gave has anything to do with batch processing. Usually you
write batch scripts with a text editor.

Anyway, you asked for suggestions and we gave them to you.

Good luck,

Its a typo. It is msndn.exe and its definitely worse than reported. I
will try scanning for malware I suspect its something more.
