Or maybe not... anyway, I have a Gateway XP sys and at another house in the
next town, my father (who refuses to use the internet) has a WIN '98 sys. He
has dial-up ability. Years ago (15 or so) I know I was able to use my 286 to
dial directly into my neighbor's computer so we could chat. I don't remember
at all how it worked, so the information I am seeking is: how would I dial
directly from my XP into his '98 through telephone connection? Is it still
possible? What are the paritculars of answering (since dialing is simple).
What has to be set up in his computer to allow it to answer a call from my
computer? off the top of my head I can see using the dial-up wizard on both
to create or set up the connection for direct connect. Any help on this would
be appreciated.

This might work: Run HyperTerminal, or whatever terminal program the
machines have, set one to "Wait for call". I think W98 has a program
titled "Terminal".
