Storyline won't play

Can anyone help me ?

I can play and create clips without any problem..... but when i drop
anything down to the storyboard, and click on "play timeline", nothing
happens.

It's really frustrating, as the individual clips will play ok. I've even
tried to completely delete movie maker 2 and reload it, but it won't even let
me do that.

any help would be appreciated

Is it all content including image files or just a particulat type of content
such as only .avi or .wmv. Are you using MM 2.0 or MM 2.1

I'm using MM 2.1, and the problem applies to evrything in the storyline.
Individually, they play fine, but when i try to get the timeline to play, it
says it's playing, but nothing happens

Interesting problem:

Two things to try and narrow your problem down.

1. check your hardware acceleration settings on your display card and make
sure it is not turned down

2. In Movie Maker go to Tools | Options | Compatibility and uncheck all the
items listed. Import a .jpg file from the MyDocuments | My Pictures folder
and stick on timeline, see if it plays.

Verify if the problem is related to hardware acceleration by reducing the
Video Acceleration from Control
Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->Troubleshoot

Things to try to fix:

Update grtaphics card drivers.
Reinstall DirectX runtime (on top of currentinstallation).

I have the same problem. I only imported JPGs and still timeline doesnt play.
When I open the program and play a clip I can see it right. But if I click
play on the timeline the preview windows seems to crash and I cant play no
more clips.
If I restart then I can preview images again.

I tried reducing acceleration and updating drivers but it doesn´t work.
I used the previous version with the same hardware and I worked like a charm.

Thanks.

I am having the same problem. It stalls whenever I try to play in the time
line...

Where do you see the compatibility in the options? mine only has two
tabs...please help.

Thanks!

The compatibility tab is new in Movie Maker 2.1 which installs with the
windows XP SP2 download.

I'm still having the same problem...... it's driving me nuts !!

The exact symptoms are that i can edit clips in my collection that've been
imported without a problem. For example..... splitting a clip down from 1
minute to 30 seconds..... then i drop it to the timeline - and it plays....
but once i've stopped or paused it, or it's finished playing, the timeline
won't play anymore. It says it's playing, but the marker just flickers at the
beginning, and if i drag it along, it has no effect.

A clue to the problem may be that once the timeline has finished playing for
the first time, the marker jump way ahead into dead space. Say a clip is 20
seconds long, when it's finished playing, the marker will jump forward to 40
seconds. After that, it refuses to play (although if i click on a clip in the
collections area, that will play by itself without a problem)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer

Hotdog,

Is it all types of video files or just certain types like .avi or .mpeg?
What about a image format does it have any strange behavior?

Thanks for your reply. (We may a breakthrough!! ) On further investigation
it seems that Video Clip files and Windows Media Audio / Video files seem to
behave correctly when dropped to the timeline, and the problem starts when i
introduce mpeg files (which make up the majority of my library)

Is there any way i can combat this without having to convert them all to one
of the other two files?.

I did download service pack, but it says my version is 2.0.3.....I have
noticed that a lot of people are having this problem, is it something that
microsoft is currently working on to get it fixed? I import mpeg2 video,
which may be the problem...

MPEG is common problem, Microsoft does not ship a Mpeg codec so its all 3rd
party and some work better than others. check out www.papajohn.org for more
info on the mpeg issues.

Are you sure it service pack 2 and not 1? Double check the service pack
version installed use Start | Run and type winver and hit OK. If indeed it
is Service Pack 2 then there was a problem with the Movie Maker 2.1 install.
Let us know if this is the case. You can try a manual re-install to see if
the 2.1 bits were copied but not properly registered

1. Go to your directory Program files | Movie Maker
2. Double click on all the files that start with WMM2 there should be (8) if
a dialog pops up asking which program to use to open this file, use select
program from list, then browse to c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe and
check the box always use this program to open this file type.
(If the .dll files open with something weird like notepad then you will need
to right click on the WMM2 files and choose Open with | Choose program)
3. Not all 8 files will succeed in registering only 5 will
4. Go to start | run and type cmd in the text box and then hit ok this will
bring up a command prompt
5. Drag and drop from program files | movie maker the file moviemk.exe into
the command prompt box you opened in step 4
6. add a / regserver at the end of the line and press enter. (It will look
like this:) C:\Documents and Settings\your name>"C:\Program Files\Movie
Maker\moviemk.exe" /regserver
7. try Movie Maker again

That didn't work....

I went into the browse folder and went to system32, i couldn't find
regsvr32.exe, so I typed it manually, and hit enter, it worked. It took me
back to the open with window and what ever was selected it tried to open it
in that....what am I doing wrong?

Use the search (just right-click on start button and choose search) and find
regsvr32.exe then just use the browse to point to that location, when you
get to that step in the re-install instructions. Manually typing it in
found it becuase the paths stored in the system must include where ever it
located. I am assuming that you did have service pack 2 installed and your
Movie Maker version read 2.1.4026 since you are trying to reinstall
manually?

Toby,

I tried to import JPGs, MP3 and AVIs. When I preview an image it works OK,
but it doesnt work for AVI, the same files worked fine in a previous version,
so its not a problem of this files.
If a drag an element to the storyline and press play I cant preview no more
images.
Preview windows flickers.
I did a small test, trying to make a movie only using images (JPGs) but
storyline wont play.
I used to work with Movie Maker and worked ok with the same hardware and
files. There must be something with SP2 or MM2.

If I was not clear, please tell me what can I send you or explain better.
Thanks.
