Stop Error Screen/ Safe Mode Unavailable/Recovery Console

Hi everyone,
Re-WindowsXP/Intel 845 chipset -in use for 5 years w/o prior problems.

Stop error screen-
A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage
..... If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart
your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps. Check for
viruses, remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.
Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured & terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart.
STOP:0x0000007B (0xf794E640, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

Safe Mode - hangs at windows\system32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys. Followed article
ID324764 and disabled driver by use of recovery console and listsvc. No
longer hangs but blue error screen arrives after selecting safe mode. All
other options, such as last good configuration result in me arriving back to
the blue screen as well.

Also read article IDs 307654 & 314058.

If not already apparent, I can only start via XP CD and I never reach the
log on screen. Blue stop error screen appears, can't proceed any further and
the only option left is the 'restart' button. Stuck in a loop.

Whilst in Recovery Console used CHKDSK /R but no change. As far as viruses
and spyware are concerned, definitions are regularly updated and PC scanned.
Last scanned the prior evening.

I suspect my problem involves hard drive and/or controllers. That morning I
downloaded Intels's INF Update Utility v8.1.1.1010 and a driver, Performance
Software Accelerator v2.3. During a failed attempt late last night to repair
using XP CD, a warning message appeared strongly warning against installing
Intel 82801BA Ultra ATA Controller, which advice I followed.

I also downloaded from Microsoft Update (after Intel downloads)-
Office File Converter Pack
Security update Outlook 2002
Direct X 9? update?

Via Recovery Console, in addition agp440, also disabled Intel Ide Chn Dr
(Ultra ATA Controller) and Intel ac97intc. All to no avail. Blue screen
present with stop error screen and safe mode does not work.

If not already, apparent I'm using another computer to the PC which is
disabled.

Any ideas or help appreciated.

The major reference I found mentioned a boot sector virus. Since you are not
reaching the logon screen, it's something with the drive, anyway.

How to troubleshoot "Stop 0x0000007B" errors in Windows XP :

If you think virus is unlikely, you are probably faced with drive failure.

Most instances of the 0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error are
resolved by running CHKDSK /R as you have already tried. The next
most likely suspect would be a physical problem with the hard drive.
Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic utility. Run that to check out the hard drive for
problems.

Good luck

Hi Ron,

I found the appropriate diagnostic tool at Seagate.

Downloaded onto floppy disk, Sea Tools for DOS. My drive failed the test.
I got another opinion and he agrees with you and as a result of the
diagnostic test failure, in his opinion the hard drive is 'stuffed'. A new
one is on order.

Thankyou for your suggestion to try the diagnostic tool.

best wishes
Maxine
