Stop Error Screen

Vinnie

I tried to turn my computer on and got the following error message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error screen, restart your
computer. If this appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or Uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup
utilities. Check your harddrive configuration and check for any updated
drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart
your computer.

Technical info: *** STOP: 0X00000024 (0X00190203, 0X86390320, 0XC0000102,
0X00000000)

I tried to follow these steps but I cannot turn the computer on. This Stop
Error message keeps appearing and it's impossible to follow the recommneded
steps. I tried turning the computer on via Safe-Mode and it's the same thing,

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Thank you

Do you have important data files you need to recover or do you already
have a backup?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure. Check for variants
of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Does the computer boot in safe mode?

Try booting with only keyboard, mouse and monitor connected.

Background information on Stop Error message

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a
physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may
be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive
fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running
ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters
such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check
the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or
SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device
drivers to the most current versions.
