still have McAfee update problem

Hi

A friend who has McAfee AV v 7 (on Win 98SE) has been having trouble for a
while accessing
the update files via http://download.mcafee.com/updates/4x.asp

Apparently he was accessing this site and downloading updates from there for
quite a
while without a problem, but for the past 2-3 weeks the page just won't
open.

He's done on-line scans and has Zone Alarm running.

I've been accessing the site and doing the downloads for him - with no
problem.

He accesses other sites at random with no problem.

We've looked in his hosts file and there's nothing causing blocks/redirects.

There are no apparent problems with the running of his computer.

So this is the only site that doesn't open.

Any ideas? Not looking for a workaround via ftp sites or whatever, just want
to understand why this is happening.

Have you/they run the SpyBot or Adaware to see if there's any
malware/spyware on the machine? This can sometimes create problems like
this. If this has not been done, and they don't have them now, then go to
the sites below and follow the instructions. AV's won't necessarily detect
malware or spyware, as they are not a virus. That is why you need programs
like SpyBot and Adaware. They should also have SpywareBlaster if they don't
already have it to prevent malware, spyware and other scumware from getting
on their system. Firewalls only keep them from 'calling home' *after* they
get on the machine, it does not prevent them from getting there.

They should first download and run the HighJackThis. Then while they are
waiting for their logs to be analyzed, they should run the SpyBot and then
Adaware to be sure there are no bugs on their system. They should download
both of them, update and then run them both, as what one does not find, the
other may

HiJackThis: - Free

Go to
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html ,

and download HiJackThis. Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the
Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log some plae you remember where it is. Most of
what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix anything yet.

Open a the copy of your log in NotePad and made a copy. Then you can go here
to post you log:
http://forum.aumha.org/

Go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to open. You can
post as a guest. It's also a good site to keep for reference. The experts
there will analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at
least a few hours or a days time for a response.

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer.

we had this for one poster on the ncafee forums. search your
harddrive(orratther your friends) Have they a file called scvhost.exe?
(note svchost.exe that 1 is ok)

It appeared that he had w32/gaobot and that meassed up his registry and
stopped him getting to mcafee sites.

Thank you for the additional information. While I am not the original
poster, hopefully, they will also read you good information here. :)
